[NU] Robinson, the Savvyhead

edited July 2014 in nupocalypse
Robinson is around 40 and stocky, with a bushy beard shot through with grey and a pair of eyeglasses he crafted for himself. He wears a lot of layers, typically a collared shirt with a wool overshirt or crewneck sweater over it and a rugged old army jacket that he favors for its many pockets.

Robinson came up in the dangerous ruins of an extended urban area, where the landscape will swallow up the headstrong and destroy the weak. For many years he made his way as a tough and a problem-solver until the old gang fell apart, got killed or worse. He has since come around to problem-solving in a more constructive way: building things, fixing things, taking copious notes on the mysteries of the world, and making at least a token effort to make an appearance in the lives of the kids he sired in his rambling days.

Though stern in countenance and apt to get lost in his own thoughts, Robinson is an avid listener and learner, and easily intrigued by projects, mysteries and technical challenges to keep his mind busy.

Cool+1 H
Hot -1 H

Look: Man, utility wear plus tech, hard face, calm eyes, stumpy body.

Spooky intense: when you do something under fire, roll+weird instead of roll+cool.

Oftener right: when a character comes to you for advice, tell them what you honestly think the best course is. If they do it, they take +1 to any rolls they make in the doing, and you mark an experience circle.

Things speak: whenever you handle or examine something interesting, roll+weird. On a hit, you can ask the MC questions. On a 10+, ask 3. On a 7–9, ask 1:
• who handled this last before me?
• who made this?
• what strong emotions have been most recently nearby this?
• what words have been said most recently nearby this?
• what has been done most recently with this, or to this?
• what’s wrong with this, and how might I fix it?
Treat a miss as though you’ve opened your brain to the world’s psychic maelstrom and missed the roll.

Special: if you and another character have sex, they automatically speak to you, as though they were a thing and you’d rolled a 10+, whether you have the move or not. The other player and the MC will answer your questions between them.

Many-pocketed army jacket, sweaters & workshirts, grease-stained trousers
Basic toolbox - kept in the Range Rover
Hunting rifle (2-harm far loud) - kept in the Range Rover
    9mm pistol (2-harm close loud)

A garage: an old gas and service station on one of the roads out of town, up a wooded hill, close enough to the village centre that it’s a reasonable walk. Inside there’s a small front office that looks through a little service window into the main workspace, which is a big skylit room cluttered with various projects and miscellany. Nearest the office is a "nerve center" full of maps and drawings and notes by Robinson, which also serves as a kind of lounge. There’s an annex out back where he has a bedroom and a kitchen.

A truck AND van: A classic Range Rover, and Matilda's box truck & thereby her scavenging operation.

Weird-ass electronica: including a series of handheld anomaly detectors for revealing unseen hazards, a dream recorder/subconscious playback device, highly sensitive but so-far useless experimental devices

Controlled growing space: a field of barley and hops, a brewery inside the workshop.

As a player, I am interested in seeing Robinson in situations where he might
    - Sit down with someone and offer mysterious wisdom
    - Wrestle with long-term weirdness
    - Experience the beauty and the tragedy of the ruins
    - Handle interesting objects and uncover their mysteries
    - Be summoned to figure something out or solve a problem
    - Be drawn out of his lair, by force or by necessity
    - Offer someone a home, a home base, or at least a confidante
    - Reveal his mean side, fight viciously when cornered, as he once did
