Math's not my real name, of course. I've never much liked my real name: Mathilda. It's all lady-like and fancy. Too fancy for a flyer like me.
I was born on Tarrena. I don't remember it much. I was just a kid when we left for Lagost, so I think I mostly remember the green of the hills, all speckled with purple and white flowers, because of the stereoscopes. I can think of them, but I'm hard-pressed to remember any details, if you know what I mean. Since the Burning, the hills aren't much like that anymore. They say, maybe, give 'em another generation or so, and they might come back. My kids, if I had any and if they visited Terrena, might see them flowers someday. I guess for some, that's a pretty thought.
Most folks here on Lagost, like most folks everywhere, remember the Burning and how badly out of control both sides got. No one wants that again. But we still gotta put up with some folks looking down their noses at us for being "conformists." And we call 'em "old-fashioned." Skiurgism's s'posed to be about freedom, you know? Freedom to choose to be whatever you want and follow who you want. But they got rules - freedom, they say, comes with a price tag. Well, I ain't paying - what's the point in that?
Anyway, I'm sure you know all that. There ain't nobody in the Seven who don't know what the fuss over Skirugism's done to Tarrena, so I'll get off my soapbox now. What else do you want to know?
Jade's one of the prettiest turaco you've ever seen. She's as vain as any proper lady, so you'll never find any of her feathers mussed or out of place, which is funny, considering. I like to tell people she's the one keeping us in order, 'cause the Seven know I'm usually a bit of a mess myself. She's smart too, and she likes to think she's taking care of me, I think. And she ain't afraid to give me what-for if she thinks I'm being particularly thick-skulled. Turacos don't talk, you know, not like you or I, but she's got a real expressive face -- you can usually tell what she's thinking, so it's like she's answering proper when I'm talking to her.
She's a lot like most turacos otherwise: got those dark green feathers and that beak and claws. And if you get on the wrong side of her, she'll use 'em to drop you outta the sky so quick, you won't even know what happened.
You've got a squadron of six flyers, Math. The Longkeel is big enough for an aerie for your birds, though, so your squad
Assandre
Assandre is the third daughter of a minor noble house. She's been "allowed" to serve on board the Longkeel while her arranged marriage is being sorted.
Thomer
Thomer is the oldest member of the squad. He's also the biggest. Normally flyters are small and almost always female. Thomer raised Pookwit from an egg and the big bird is more than happy to carry him. Thomer's a happy-go-lucky kind of guy, always making bad jokes and puns.
Colizabel
As Armsmaster Rho once said, "Colizabel is simply trouble with a capital T. She can outdrink and outshoot most any sailor on board, but unfortunately, she knows that. And likes to remind everyone."
Catlip
Catlip is Helmsmaster Vail's younger sister. She's not the best flyer in the squadron (probably the worst), but she's good at lots of other things.
Orset
Quartermaster Dashad says of Orset, "She's able enough, but that flyer's one wrench short of a toolbox, I tell you."
Falius
Falius is a "part-time Alchemist", always tinkering with things and trying out new saddles and concoctions for his "grenades". They usually work. Well, sometimes.
Math, Who's your second-in-command? Who's the one who challenges you the most? Which one is your closest ally, might even be a friend if you weren't their commanding officer?
Thomer's my second in command. He don't look like much, and his jokes are terrible, but he's as reliable as my Papa's ol' watch. He's got a knack for keeping a cool head and leveling out the rest of us. Plus, he's got a lot of tricks up his sleeve. Rumor is he ain't got my extra pip 'cause he's gone and upset the Admiral. Don't know if there's any truth in that, but that's what they say.
Orset's probably the hardest one to work with. The girl's mad. And, understand, I say that with some admiration for her. But she ain't exactly goal-oriented, and she's none too good doing as she's told: too busy trying out new tricks and trying to break her own neck. I think if they knew what they were up against in Orset, folks'd steer clear of us.
I get along with Assandre the best. It surprised me, truth be told. Like everyone else, I figured she'd be so busy telling us how great she is that she'd be more of a liability. But we found out fast she's a natural flyer. Like the rest of us, she just wants to be out there on the wind, free and alive. I think of her keeping house somewhere, looking up at the sky all wistful-like with a bunch of fat babies playing with her apron, and it makes me sad for her. She knows this is her last chance to do something that's just for her, and it seems to me she wants to make it count.
Why don't you roll six twelve-sided dice? We'll each take turns assigning them to the table choices on pages 16 and 17. You go first, and assign any of the dice to any of the three tables: - Skylands Governance: Form And Substance - Skylands Disposition - Relationship
It looks like we should do this for all seven skylands: Lagost, Olmar, Jund, Rhen, Tarrena, Khand and Pimend. You've already done some work in your write-up above, so let's incorporate that.
We can create a couple Skylands and stop if we have enough, or do all seven.
For Tarrena, I'm choosing the Relationship: Conquered and Conquered for Olmar (2)
Conqueror and Conquered. One of these lands conquered the other, and that state continues into the present. How long ago was the conquest? How is the conquered land kept under control? What is the conqueror taking from the conquered, and are they building or colonizing as they do so?
Tarrena took over Olmar a decade before Lagost stood up to them. The Lagost-Tarrena war took its toll on both sides, but Tarrenan warlords still rule Olmar. Their grip is loosening, however.
In the wake of the wars and uncertainty plaguing their northern neighbors, Pimend's people have begun to find comfort and peace in the piety of Khand and their dedication to a simpler, more isolationist lifestyle...
Olmar Governance: Junta: Rules by the military (the Tarrenan military) (4) Relationships: *Lagost: Vice Trade (7)

Rhen Disposition: Prim (7) Governance: Meritocracy: Rule by the few able to pass tests of merit, which are often martial in style. Relationships: Khand: Hostile Buildup. These skylands have some kind of tense incompatibility (an old feud, differing religions, a trade war) that keeps both wary; they are regularly building up troops, seeking allies, and engaging in intrigues in preparation for the war that is one day going to erupt. (8) What's the underlying tension? Rhenari believe in the power of man, they are violently opposed to the traveling clergy of the Khand, and there are rumors of a possible holy war.

Jund Disposition: Vengeful (5) Governance: Technocracy (6) Relationships: Pimend: Spreading Practices. Jund's clockwork tech has given the Skyland a superiority over production and labor. They are decisively driving the merchant guilds of Pimend out of business, gobbling up their business. The Pimend merchants have started to look for money and supplies elsewhere to prop up their flailing economy. Pimend unemployment is rampant.

This particularly nasty drug was first used as a biological weapon against Tarrenan troops during an attempted invasion decades ago. What's the underlying tension? Rhenari believe in the power of man, they are violently opposed to the traveling clergy of the Khand, and there are rumors of a possible holy war.

They are decisively driving the merchant guilds of Pimend out of business, gobbling up their business. The Pimend merchants have started to look for money and supplies elsewhere to prop up their flailing economy. Pimend unemployment is rampant.

*Tarrena: Vice Trade (7) - Jund supplies a particular drug to Tarrena. This highly addictive substance was outlawed on Tarrena because it puts users into a state similar to sleep-walking in which all inhibitions are removed. It is called the Walking Death as users ceases bathing and even eating, leading to infection and sores on the body. This particularly nasty drug was first used as a biological weapon against Tarrenan troops during an attempted invasion decades ago. The drug followed the retreating troops back to Tarrena, where Jund's chemists and pushers have created a profitable market.
