[Snowpocalypse] Table Chatter

  • Snowmobiles. The first one is real, the second is a "concept" for a racing snowmobile. It is delish, no?
  • @mischa, this is what I think of when I picture a zamboni:
    image
  • Much tasty. Searching Google for the second image found me this:

    image

Imagine that all decked out like a candycoated neon Bel-Air.
  • That's James Bondy.

Of course, none of this would survive the apocalypse. Sadly.

  • Posted an in-progress character sketch. Did I miss anything immediate?

I need to hit the sack, but let's finish this up tomorrow.

The Gunlugger (Molotov Kalashnikov) wasn't born in either the Underground or Underlake. I like the idea that, while travelling, he picked up some radio chatter and started communicating with a stranger. Just a few bursts of chatter then static; eventually, he was convinced to detour in Chicago. It could be any one of the characters on the other end of the radio.
  • Let's start HX here and I will review PCs. Adam, you want to start?
  • Molotov once helped Rossingol do something horrible. Take Hx+2 with her.

    Everyone else take Hx+1.
  • Lemma finds Silica the most strange. Take Hx+1.

Rest of you, take Hx-1. I'm a little strange myself.
  • Silicia, you are the prettiest. Take Hx+2.

The rest take Hx=0. I'm a bit of a closed book.
  • So I've got this thing: One of them was once kind and unafraid towards you. Ignore what they tell you and write Hx+3.

    Molotov — that's you.
  • Hadden has two, because why not:

Ross, you once faced down dedicated violence to get me out of a fix. Hx+2.

Lemma, you once let me down in a pinch and I was stuck holding the bill. Hx-1.

    Everyone else, Hx +1.
  • Hey Hadden, Ross thinks you're pretty (which gives her +1Hx on top of that Hx+2).
  • Look, Hadden, I told you the batteries on that thing were good for four hours as long as you kept them warm. If it gave out on you, I'm pretty sure you got sloppy and let them freeze.
  • Silica adds 1 to whatever number you give me (And I'll override some of them in a bit)

But everyone gets -1 Hx to Silica. I keep my true self secret.
  • It's common knowledge that Lemma is smart. Molotov agrees, even if she is suka sometimes. I get Hx+1 to that Hx-1.
  • Lemma, I followed your instructions to the letter. That was my ass on the line, not yours. I wish it didn't have to be this way- you've been reliable in the past.
  • Hey Ross, thanks for noticing. I clean up good, huh?
  • Lemma doesn't like when people break things on purpose. Molotov does that sometimes, but she's pretty sure Molotov's a blunt instrument, and there's no tool she can't figure out how to use. Rossi, though... she pegs Rossi as the biggest potential problem. (I add 1 to what she told me.)

The rest of you, I'm subtracting 1 from what you told me.

Silica has been secretly watching Hadden the operator for some time. He seems to have connections all over and that's pretty important, maybe someone I can scam for a little jingle when times get rough again.
I write +3 on my Hx sheet for Hadden (No change on yours)
  • Silica, you should know Molotov has ice in his veins; whether he gets it from you, or you share the same dealer, is up in the air.
  • One of Silica's Hx choices says someone dislikes her (or seems to) any volunteers?
  • edited January 2014
I'll take that option. Molotov treats Silica poorly, to further distance himself from the truth - he likes her. A fact which Ross has already used against him.
  • Is that so Molotov? Yeah then that's a thing. If you want to get it from me maybe we can work something out. You're not an addict, though, are you? Just use it when the job demands?
  • edited January 2014
The Brothers (read: Russians) running the Mill (read: prison) where he grew up would hook kids young. It kept them in line, made them feel like little Kings. He's addicted, and wants off the stuff. It's one of the ways he treats Silica so poorly - he says she's brittle and weak, can't live without her ice. Maybe he's trying to help her too, by ridiculing her. He wouldn't admit to it.
  • edited January 2014
Ok, that sounds like an interesting pair... I'm ok with Silica being a the source for Molotov's stuff.
  • Where does Silica get the ice? There's this family out there, or maybe tribe is a better word. They're the closest place, but they won't deal with just anyone. The shit is expensive, but it's not really about the jingle... that just covers their costs.

If they don't know you they'll shoot on sight and the lab can be broken down and moved if need be, though that hasn't had to happen in a while. The cold out there is no less than lethal, so to get to them you have to know, and pretty much have to already be a user.

I'll bet you anything Hadden brings in the icewalking drug as part of his "deliveries" gig. On a snowmobile across the lake. (NOT A ZAMBONI)
  • (you made me chuckle, Mischa)
  • edited January 2014
Well before the whole world ends up revolving around this rare and dangerous drug, what other things are people dealing with here? Seems like water might not be too scarce, what about food? Guess there's fishing but can that satisfy everyone? Warm clothing and stuff has to be a problem but it seems like the biggest challenge to most is warmth, fuel, insulation, stuff like that.
  • In service, Rich.

Not sure if this is the right way to start this, but the Operator playbook says my crew/contacts can consist of other PCs. We know Lemma and I have some history, and I feel like Molotov is someone who Hadden would call in for support a time or two. Not sure how that went. Distant but reliable?

I think Silica, Ross, and Hadden are "it's complicated."
  • @scott Solar may be the answer for power. I could see a huge solar farm out on the surface of the lake- plenty of clear flat area to spread out.
  • A combination of what Rich mentioned earlier (from that Colony film), plus several scenes from the Book of Eli lead me to suggest: what about sanitation? Soap, cleaning products, wet-wipes. A great deal of harmful viruses can be avoided with clean drinking water and basic hygiene.
  • Both good points. Solar might work if it's actually ever sunny... Is it actually ever sunny? Also if there's high winds, accumulating ice and snow, there's likely damage which would need to be repaired.

"Time to scrape the arrays again..."
  • @Mischa - Silica wouldn't be on your crew, but you know, that druggie will do anything for some jingle, right? If you need someone who can handle the cold and be a little more subtle than waving guns around.
  • edited January 2014
Absolutely, @Mischa, distant but reliable. The perfect contact. What gig of Hadden's would he be suited for?

    @scott: ouch! hehe
  • Alcohol is how you purify water in times of strife. Geothermal is another power supply option, if people had the foresight to dig holes. Solar power doesn't do so well at low temperatures (the photovoltaic effect is less efficient in sub-zero temperatures), and wind-farms tend to mechanically fall apart in snow and ice.

Anything that does work, probably only works minimally.
  • @Mischa, Ross probably isn't on your crew. She's something of a lone wolf when it comes to working.
  • edited January 2014
I'm not sure, but did we agree that solar winds carrying radiation were responsible for the apocalypse? If so, perhaps there's energy on the winds. I'm fond of the poetry inherent in clinging for life on the harbinger of humanity's destruction.
  • I don't think we know what caused the apocalypse. What matters to most people is their daily reality. How we got here no longer matters, just what dangers and effects are still around.
  • @Kaillan Hadden would certainly appreciate an extra gun on a few long-distance deliveries with valuable packages.
  • @Rich Sanity check- are Inuit Snow Goggles cool or goofy? The ones that are slits for eyes?
  • IF they're these:
    image

I think they're pretty dang cool!

    (sorry for the Zamboni pile-on)
  • It's all cool! I told yall I'm ign'ant on cold weather stuff.
  • Whoops, late to the party, I guess, sorry.

Everyone gets +1 with Dice the Chopper, he ain't that complicated.

Ross once stood up to me, Gang and all! Good for her, and +1 for my histroy with her.

Everyone else, I'm knocking -1 off what you told me because I don't really care all that much about, y'know, people.

  • Hey we have a chopper. Hi Dice!
  • (And how do you do those cool in-line pics? I am not a coder!)

    Html image tag

    Looks like this

    <img class="InlineImage" src="http://www.yayanoctopus.com/images/misc/silica.jpg " alt="Class" width="320"></img>
  • Ugh. OK, maybe just links then.
  • C'mon, Jim. Copy + paste aint so bad.

You can even copy the text straight from imgur (use the text listed under :
    HTML Image (websites & blogs)

Only takes a minute, and it prettifies things! Worse comes to worst, shoot me the link to your pic and I'll put it in your post for your character.
  • I've reviewed characters this morning, will get up some scenes today. I'm really loving everyone's characters!

This is going to rock on toast, y'all.
  • I don't have a clear idea of what Hadden looks like. Yall are all over the character pictures, so I feel obligated to find something.
  • I use pics as a short-hand to cover for mediocre writing skills. If you have an actor or look in mind, feel free to let me know what you are thinking, I can help.
  • LET'S DO HIGHLIGHTS
    (thanks Kaillan)
  • Rossi! We've got history, ever since the Incident down in those tunnels. Highlight me.
  • Hadden, highlight Ross please.
    Molotov, highlight Hard.
  • Molotov, also highlight Sharp.
  • Basic question: What's highlights?
  • Sorry I didn't explain it, Mischa!

OK, look on your sheet's HX. Who do you have highest HX with (highest number)?

Ask that character (player) here to highlight you. The player will pick a stat for you. Mark that as highlighted. Whenever you roll that stat, pass or fail, you get 1 XP.

I will then pick a second stat. Mark them both as highlighted on your character sheet so we all know. I'm forgetful.

    Highlights can change every session.
  • Also: if you have multiple PCs with the highest Hx, you get to choose who highlights you.
  • edited January 2014
I've got a tie: Dice and Ross are both Hx +1 (assuming I've done this right). Both, or do I choose?

    Thanks, @adam!
  • Rossi, highlight me, please.
  • Dice, can you highlight me?

    Rossi, highlight Sharp.
  • Rossi, also highlight Cool.
  • Moltov, please highlight Silica
  • I want to see you be Weird, Silica.
  • Silica, please also be Sharp
  • Highlight Weird, Lemma.
  • Also highlight Hot, Lemma.
  • I found some character art I like, huzzah!
  • yay Mischa!
  • hey Jim, I take it you didn't like my gang names suggestions? Or did you miss that post?
  • Sorry, Skegs/Skags are a part on a snowmobile that I liked the sound of. No disrespect to your suggestions, this one just grabbed me as I was surfing snowmobile sites.

Ross, what intrigues you about Dice?
  • Oh, I love the name of the gang itself, I meant the names of the gang members. Did you see it in Dice character sheet thread? Should I remove that?
  • I dunno... Mutual respect for a guy that runs around with his face covered most of the time? I mean, that and you've got quite the rep out here as a bad-ass... I'm kinda curious to see if you're all that, or it's just words.
  • So... Hard?
  • Jim, can you highlight Hadden, please?
  • Nearly forgot, can we keep all images as SFW?
  • Re:names, edited the re-supply post accordingly.
  • edited January 2014
Hadden, Dice likes your Sharp, because words.
  • Heh heh.

See I thought you were asking Ross what actually intrigued her about Dice... You were asking for highlights. OOPS!

Yes, hard will do just fine!
  • Sorry, too clever by half. : P Hard it is!
  • hey Hadden, also highlight Hot.
  • "it's probably some stupid dispute between the Wrigleys and Comiskeys over dogma because religion. I could give not one. Single. Fuck. about whose ground is holier, but they get increasingly crazy about it as October gets closer, which sucks for the neighbors because collateral damage."

    I just had a little baseball-flavored nerdgasm.
  • Hahaha, I wasn't sure if everyone would catch that reference, but it's the logical culmination of that cross-town rivalry, isn't it? : )

Hey, any chance you could do a separate thread to sticky/bookmark that just has the formatting advice? I really, seriously do not know coding, and having all the tip sine one spot and not buried inside the Table Talk would be awesome.
  • Hey, should we be reading the other threads, or is it ok to hold off and respond in-character as events warrant? Is that too much of a pain in the ass? Curious what the default assumption is about keeping up with the other threads.
  • I will work on a tips and tricks. Its something I've been meaning to do for a while. My formatting skills come from copy + paste other people's stuff, mostly.

As for reading other threads, its your call based on time. I'd rather you keep up your own thread, and read through other threads if you like. I hope we can work together to keep the people of note thread viable and useful.

FYI Jim, we have an ongoing Hangout (text only) on most of the time. Not sure if you can check it at the store, but we chat a bit during the day. No stress, just a fun little kibbitzing hangout.
  • Probably not something I can do except at lunch, but I'll keep it in mind. As you can see, I mostly come out at night. Mostly.
  • Hey, I noticed that Hedda and I made up different NPCs who supply power. Might be more fun to have it be the same person. I'm fine with editing Handplant into Backside Misty and changing the pronouns.
  • @Transcriptase Cool! I was trying to come up with something more notable for a power broker, and I swear I rolled that name off the list.
  • hey Mischa, you rolled twice for Moonlighting. It actually works kinda weird. You roll once, but after choosing the gigs to work. I took the first one as official.
  • @Rich Okay, thanks for clarifying.
  • OOC for the 'resupply' thread: I think I may not have answered clearly enough!

When you asked who was there, I said 'just the 4 of us', meaning the twins, Dubstep, and me. I thought that you might have taken 4 to mean 4 plus me, so I rolled with Terrorcore being there, but now it's obvious I'm not 100% clear on exactly who is present in the shop. Sorry, can you clarify?
  • I probably misread your post there, Jim. Sorry! I will edit. I thought the whole gang was there. Let's go with only the NPCs mentioned in thread so far... which is several, sorry. I'll tweak it a bit.
  • Jim (Leftahead), I took Japanoise out of the scene, so its just Terrorcore, the twins and Dubstep.
  • First advance, taking Direct-brain whisper projection
  • hey all! I've ended first session.

Please let me know who knows your PC better so we can adjust HX.

Then, we can do highlights and jump into session two!
